adolescent: Someone in that transitional stage of physical and psychological development that begins at the onset of puberty, typically between the ages of 11 and 13, and ends with adulthood.
anxious: (n. anxiety) A feeling of dread over some potential or upcoming situation, usually one over which someone feels they have little control.
biology: The study of living things. The scientists who study them are known as biologists.
cancer: Any of more than 100 different diseases, each characterized by the rapid, uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. The development and growth of cancers, also known as malignancies, can lead to tumors, pain and death.
celiac disease: (also known as sprue) A disorder in which the immune system attacks the small intestine after it encounters foods containing gluten, a wheat protein. People with this disease suffer from stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea and a constant feeling of fatigue. They must avoid gluten-containing products like bread, cake and cookies.
cerebral palsy: A group of disorders that affect someone’s ability to move. It stems from damage to the developing brain during pregnancy, at birth or shortly thereafter. Symptoms can include poor muscle coordination, loss of muscle tone (strength), poor reflexes and balance. The disease has no cure, but its effects can improve or worsen as someone ages. Some patients also may have other brain impairments that affect speech, hearing, sight and more.
chemical: A substance formed from two or more atoms that unite (bond) in a fixed proportion and structure. For example, water is a chemical made when two hydrogen atoms bond to one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2O. Chemical also can be an adjective to describe properties of materials that are the result of various reactions between different compounds.
dairy: Containing milk or having to do with milk. Or a building or company in which milk is prepared for distribution and sale.
