anthropologist: A social scientist who studies humankind, often by focusing on its societies and cultures.
behavioral ecologist: A scientist who studies how animal behavior relates to where animals live.
biologist: A scientist involved in the study of living things.
bipedal: An adjective to describe an animal that walks on two feet.
canine: Members of the biological family of canids. These are carnivores and omnivores. The family includes dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals and coyotes. (in anatomy) The pointed tooth in a mammal that separates its incisors from its premolars. These canine teeth tend to be especially long in carnivores.
carcass: The body of a dead animal.
colleague: Someone who works with another; a co-worker or team member.
culinary: Having to do with cooking, kitchen techniques and food preparation.
dolphins: A highly intelligent group of marine mammals that belong to the toothed-whale family. Members of this group include orcas (killer whales), pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.
ecologist: A scientist who works in a branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
evolutionary: An adjective that refers to changes that occur within a species over time as it adapts to its environment. Such evolutionary changes usually reflect genetic variation and natural selection, which leave a new type of organism better suited for its environment than its ancestors. The newer type is not necessarily more “advanced,” just better adapted to the conditions in which it developed.
fundamental: Something that is basic or serves as the foundation for another thing or idea.
harpoon: A spear-like weapon that is thrown to pierce an aquatic animal. It’s barbed or hooked head keeps the weapon attached to the animal. An attached rope can then be pulled in, bringing the animal to a hunter’s boat. A harpoon may also be any latching device that pierces a surface to hold onto it.
